This test episode was shot so early Rockapella's clothes hadn't arrived yet! J/K, they wear street clothes at the end of The Case of the Purloined Pole as well.
Notice how raw Rockapella's cues sound during the contestant intros and throughout the episode. (The "Gotta Go" theme for departing contestants actually sounds depressing rather than uplifting.)
I always found Barry Carl's "Mrs. Pumpkinclanger" more disturbing than funny. The Chief's comment about her relative's calendar is awesomely absurd, but Lynne doesn't sell the joke!
Bob throws a John Elway bullet! Later he makes an otherwise ordinary playing of Money Game very entertaining. Also watch for a strange IUFB, the type of which would soon no longer be seen on the program. Throughout this clip, one can't help but notice an unfortunate decline in the strength of Johnny's voice shortly before his death.
I can't think of a better way to end a popular and distinguished series than to have Caldwell ad-libbing: "I'd like to thank you for being a loyal viewing audience and uh...hey, I'm Jim Caldwell, goodbye everybody!" Nice of the staff to include a Thom McKee tribute.
One of my favorites in my whole game show collection, and I didn't keep the whole show! Taped when I was 11 years old, I had no problems at the time recording over the beginning and end of this memorable TPIR episode (I definitely saved the best though!). This clip features a classic Punch-a-Bunch playing as well.
Mike Reilly was a pretty good host, unfortunately he just seemed like everyone's younger brother and didn't have a strong enough presence (or voice). He certainly does have enthusiasm though; too bad Merv didn't remember him for Crosswords.
